My name is Joel Weisbrod and I am an enthusiastic scuba diver with over thirty-five years of photography experience. Together with my colleague, Dr. Arnold Kaufman, I have written a book entitled "Digital Underwater Photography: Simple Techniques for Superior Photographs."
Right now you are probably thinking that "Digital Underwater Photography" is just another run-of-the-mill book explaining the general process involved in taking underwater pictures. This is definitely not the case!
I have looked at many of the other underwater photography books currently on the market. What I have discovered is that all of them show spectacular photos taken by a professionals using two or three strobes, one or two assistants, $25,000 worth of camera gear, professional laboratories, and lots of time at each dive waiting for the perfect fish in the perfect setting. I could go on and on but you get the picture. In addition, most (if not all of the books on the market today) contain dozens of pages explaining some technical wizardry that is definitely not the cup of tea of the average scuba/photography enthusiast. My book eliminates all of the above. While the typical scuba diver is no doubt in awe of the superb photos in these books as well as the accompanying advanced technical information presented, this certainly does not help them improve their skills when they arrive at a new dive spot. What this book does accomplish is to provide some easily repeatable steps that anyone can easily follow to improve their pictures. In other words, our book is designed for the scuba diver who would like to take superior scuba photos with minimal technical expertise.
Digital Underwater Photography is organized into four major sections. The first deals with the technical component, which entails procedural details of the process including the tools required, how to configure them, and how to use them. We then delve into the artistic component. This section deals with the look and feel of the photo. Section three encompasses the editing component. This section deals with the ability to modify the digital photograph using computer software (my area of expertise). We conclude with the production component, the final disposition of the photographic images (album, slide show, CD, addition of either music or narration, as well as the possibility of web page posting. Digital Underwater Photography is an illustrated reference guide designed for the scuba enthusiast who finds him/her self in the position of saying “I want to simply take a picture without trying to compute the perfect shutter speed, aperture, and strobe setting”.
