The second of two lighthouses built on Fire Island, this lighthouse was first completed in 1858 and after several jurisdictional changes has been reinstated as an active lighthouse. Flashing once every 7 1/2 seconds, the light from the 1000 watt bulbs is visible from more than 20 miles away.

Goat Island Lighthouse Sunset

Goat Island sits at the entrance to Newport Harbor. It is accessible by foot and by car by traveling across the causeway. The lighthouse (notice the green glow in the right center) was first lit in 1842, automated in 1923, and is still operating as an Active Aid to Navigation. The Island and lighthouse are beautiful, especially during a gorgeous sunset.

The Blockhouse Point Lighthouse was established in 1851 on the west side to the entrance to Charlottetown Harbour.  The original building, the second oldest on Prince Edward Island, is still in use and has not been restored.   The lighthouse was automated in 1962. Cape Forchu Lighthouse

Cape Forchu (Yarmouth Nova Scotia), high, rocky, well treed and almost an island itself, has a decidedly different appearance from the surrounding west Nova Scotia coast. It derives it's name from having two narrow, rocky forks that extend to the south. The Cape Forchu light is shown from a red and white vertically striped hexagonal tower, 75 ft high. This view with the sun directly behind the tower, hides the red trim and highlights the squared shape of the tower.

Peggys Cove Lighthouse

While best known as the Peggy's Cove Lighthouse (Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia) , this light was and remains officially know as the Peggy's Point Lighthouse as its purpose is to mark the point, not the cove. In any case, it was decided to erect a light to mark the eastern entrance to St. Margaret's Bay in 1868 and remains standing and in use today.

Esopus Meadows Lighthouse

In 1838, for the sum of one dollar, land was ceded to the U.S. Government by the Town of Esopus to erect a Lighthouse. The location was Mid-Hudson and the purpose was to warn mariners of the mud flats to the west - Esopus Meadows. The light first shown in 1839. Battered by the elements of flood tides and ice, in 1867 the site was described in ruinous condition. Funds for this new structure were made available in 1870.

Rondout Harbor Light

Marking the entrance to Rondout Harbor is the NEW Rondout light owned by the city of Kingston, NY. The old light was put up for bid by the government but never sold and was eventually demolished in 1953. Although the lighthouse is now uninhabited, it remains an important navigation aid and stands as a sentinel at the mouth of the Rondout Creek; inviting us to imagine days when paddle wheel boats were transporting thousands of passengers per week between New York City and Rondout

This close-up of the lighthouse shown in image #1132 focuses on the light and the lightkeeper’s balcony. While the light is currently uninhabited, it is still used to light the way into the harbor at the entrance to Rondout creek.
