Sitting at the 59th Street end of the park, The Pond is one of the most visited areas of the park. Ducks, Swans, Geese, and other birds live around the pond yea-round.
Point Reyes is one of the windiest place on the Pacific Coast of the United States. Weeks of fog, especially during the summer months, frequently reduce visibility to hundreds of feet. The Point Reyes Headlands pose a threat to each ship entering or leaving San Francisco Bay. The historic Point Reyes Lighthouse warned mariners of danger for more than a hundred years. The Point Reyes Lighthouse, built in 1870, was retired from service in 1975 when the U.S. Coast Guard installed an automated light. They then transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the National Park Service, which is preserving this historic site.
Another view of the same section of railroad tracks seen in Image #1101. The sweeping clouds against the blue sky capture the windy conditions otherwise invisible in this photograph.
Among other things, New Hope, Pennsylvania is home to one of the last remaining steam trains in America. This tourist train travels through the countryside surrounding New Hope huffing and puffing it’s way along. As the train leaves the city of New Hope, it crosses these tracks and seems to disappear into the wilderness.
The Golden Gate Bridge opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937. The bridge's 4,200 foot long main span was a world record for 27 years. The bridge's two towers rise 746 feet making them 191 feet taller than the Washington Monument. The five lane bridge crosses Golden Gate Strait which is about 400 feet deep and connects San Francisco and Marin counties. Nothing quite compares to the majestic Pacific sunsets behind the Golden Gate Bridge.
