Share the beauty of the engineer's view of the pond as the train crosses the bridge (see Image #1037). Can you feel the movement of the train as you look at the rails? The reflection of the brilliant autumn colors in the mirrorlike waters of the pond complete this spectacular scene.
A trip through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area provides the grand entrance to the Point Bonita Light. The view is breathtaking and on a clear day you can see the Golden Gate bridge in the distance. As the third lighthouse built in the San Francisco Bay area (in 1855), Point Bonita was unique. The first fog signal at Point Bonita was a surplus army cannon, but it was eventually replaced by a 1,500-pound bell that the keepers struck with a hammer.
The view of Lambertville, New Jersey has changed little over the last one hundred years. Nestled on the east bank of the Delaware River, its tree-lined streets, Victorian houses and Federal row homes and the graceful lines of its church spires continue to greet the eye as they did in the 1800s. This abandoned railroad siding makes one reminisce about the heyday of steam driven train travel from an earlier and slower time of life in America.
The colors of autumn explode on the road leading to the top of Prospect Mountain in Lake George, New York. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees adds to the marvel of nature's overpowering beauty.
The White Mountains of New Hampshire accented by the powerful autumn colors of Mother Nature. Free of snow in early autumn, these mountains are the harbingers of harsh winter weather as they become snow covered by the middle or end of the fall season.
Covered Bridges dot the countryside in most New England area states including New York State. Some now carry car traffic although most have been converted to historic sites for pedestrian traffic only. Once constructed in this covered fashion to keep horses from spooking when crossing high above rushing water, they have become a symbol of our horse drawn carriage heritage. Can you hear the horses?
It was hard to resist this magnificent sunset while driving through Jefferson, New Hampshire. At the Northern border of the White Mountain range, the flaming colors, distant mountain peaks, and clear evening sky were worth the pause to capture this moment.
