A very common inhabitant of the reefs in Grand Cayman, this large Green Moray Eel looks more imposing than it really is. A very curious creature, this moray will usually let divers get really close before it retreats back into the reef. Watching it's large jaws open and close makes it even more scary but this is due to the need for the eel to pump water through the gills for respiration.
When diving in Cozumel, Yellowline Arrow Crabs seem as plentiful as pigeons in New York. Wherever coral or a sponge meets the sandy bottom, you can expect to find these otherworldly looking crabs. While swimming along a reef, I spied this crab sitting inside this sponge posing for a picture. The brilliant color and texture of the sponge is softened by the delicate arms of the crab. This image required very little cleanup and was cropped to show-off the crab inside.
The An-Hinga also is known as the Snakebird due to its habit of swimming mostly submerged with only the head and neck above the water. Its dagger-like serrated bill is ideally suited for catching fish which it spears and flips in the air before catching and swallowing the meal. Lacking the oil glands used by most birds for preening, the An-Hinga must dry its wings in the sun after swimming.
The black vulture is a scavenger feeding on carrion and weak or sick birds and mammals. Unlike the Turkey Vulture that finds its meals using a keen sense of smell, the Black Vulture hunts using their superb vision. Notice the shape of the beak, superbly designed for tearing flesh and the concentration made evident by the posture and watchful eyes.
Formerly called the Louisiana Heron, this colorful shore bird is the most abundant heron in the Southern United States. Notice the variation in feather colors along the back of the neck and the sharp eyes.
White-Tailed Deer found at Fire Island National Seashore. One of a small herd of deer that inhabits the park here, the artist was moved by the hopeful and almost sad look in the eyes of this doe.
Again, night dives are my favorite and this photograph is one of the reasons why. Almost never seen during the day, this magnificent creature is one of the Night Crawlers seen regularly after dark. As we were swimming along the reef, this octopus was swimming along as well. A very friendly creature, we didn't have any effect on the direction or speed it was moving. The only sign of anxiety was the constant curling and stretching of different arms as it moved along the reef.
This Balloonfish (aka Spiny Puffer) seemed to be posing for this photograph. Hanging out inside this large barrel sponge, it watched me as I set up to take this photograph. Usually quite friendly, this puffer was no exception and stayed around in the sponge until after I left the scene.
The only non-white Pelican in the world, this magnificent marine bird catches fish by diving from the air far above the water. Spying a fish with its keen eyesight, the bird dives and catches the fish and the surrounding water in its impressive bill. Upon return to the surface, the water drains from the bill so the bird can tilt its head back and swallow the fish.
This bright colored male red-winged blackbird is perched on a tree at the Wakodahatchee Wildlife Preserve in southern Florida. Primarily a marsh bird, these prolific creatures will nest near almost any body of water. The brown streaked female is not nearly as colorful.
