An unexpected treat, this river otter was spotted laying in the grass at the Wakodahatchee Wildlife Preserve in southern Florida. Weighing approximately 15 pounds, the otter is an amphibious mammal and is well adapted to both land and water. Its webbed feet atre most useful for its numerous swimming breaks. The Otter is active mostly at night making this sighting even more unusual.
The order Odonata contains the dragonflies and damselflies and is one of the most popular insect groups. In North America, Odonata is composed of two suborders: Anisoptera, commonly known as dragonflies; Zygoptera, commonly known as damselflies. Dragonflies (Anisoptera) make up the more specious of the two suborders and are much more easily observed than their dainty relatives, the damselflies. They have large eyes that take up nearly the entire head surface and when not contiguous are not as widely separated as within the damselflies. Dragonflies are unmatched as fliers and have a very agile, deliberate flight.
Prancing around in this field looking for some tasty grass to chew, this cow walked directly over to me as I took her picture from the fence line. Perhaps looking for a handout, or simply curious about the camera, she posed for this photograph.
The only non-white Pelican in the world, this magnificent marine bird catches fish by diving from the air far above the water. Spying a fish with its keen eyesight, the bird dives and catches the fish and the surrounding water in its impressive bill. Upon return to the surface, the water drains from the bill so the bird can tilt its head back and swallow the fish.
