The Sea Lions that have made Pier 39 of the San Francisco Wharf their home are no strangers to photographers. Dozens of camera troting tourists visit this pier for the sole purpose of getting close to these cute animals. This Rodin pose (The Thinker) inspired the title of the photograph.
This immature Great Blue Heron is sitting at the edge of the marsh waiting for a fish, frog, or crayfish to happen along and provide a meal. Sitting perfectly still, these birds rarely give themselves away until it is too late for their prey.
Swimming along the shallow grass in Cozumel, I cam across this brightly colored hermit crab eating a small fish. Check out the bright blue colored eyes and the vivid red stripes along the arms. Not a bad looking creature considering the drab look of it's borrowed shell.
This is one of the most common herons in the south and is usually found in large mixed groups of herons and egrets. Unlike the Great Blue Heron that eats mostly fish and frogs, the lesser blue eats mostly insects. This image captures the magnificent slate blue feathers, maroon accented neck, and sharp eyes needed to hunt for its insect prey.
This large dark eyed owl can be readily identified by the distinctive pattern of feathers. Resting during the day, this bird comes out at night to feed on small rodents, frogs, and crayfish.
Laying quietly at the Loxahatchee Wildlife Preserve in Southern Florida, this alligator is taking advantage of the warming effects of the sun. Cold blooded, these impressively strong reptiles rely on the sun to keep their body temperature from falling too low.
The White Ibis is a strikingly white bird with a deep orange or red bill. Usually seen with grey legs, the legs change to the same orange or red as the bill during the breeding season. They eat large quantities of crabs and crayfish and gather in large groups to rest at night. Although rarely visible unless in flight, these birds have black wingtips.
The Wood Stork was once considered part of the Ibis family (Wood Ibis) but is now designated as a true Stork. Notice the yellow bill identifying this as an immature Wood Stork.
An unexpected treat, these river otters were spotted laying in the grass at the Wakodahatchee Wildlife Preserve in southern Florida. Weighing approximately 15 pounds, the otter is an amphibious mammal and is well adapted to both land and water. Otters are active mostly at night making this sighting even more unusual.
Soaring just above the highest marsh grasses, this Great Egret scans for a new perch. With its jet black legs fully extended behind, the bird soars silently, the only sounds made by the air moving under the impressive wingspan.
